Filtering and linking

How the items of a dashboard filter each other — master filters, combo box, list box, date filter and range filter — why a filter only works within its query and how to change that, drill-down, and filters in groups and tabs.

A dashboard becomes interactive when its items filter each other: a click on a bar shows only its values in the other items, and a date filter narrows everything down to a period.

Master filters

Charts, grids, pies, cards and other items can filter the other items. Select the item and choose under Data › Interactivity:

  • Single Master Filter — exactly one value is selected; a click selects another one.
  • Multiple Master Filter — with Ctrl+click you select several values; Clear Master Filter in the header of the item clears the selection.

For charts and pies, Target dimensions determines what is filtered by: Arguments, Series or Points. Pivot, text box and bound image do not filter. If an item should always show everything, switch on Data › Ignore Master Filters for it.

Filter elements

Combo Box, List Box and Tree View always filter the other items. Under Design › Item Type, you set whether one or several values can be selected: for the combo box, Standard for one and Checked for several; for the list box, Checked for several and Radio for one.

  • Without a selection, a filter element does not filter; all values remain visible.
  • Allow Empty Filter lets you clear the selection again with Standard and Radio. Enable Search shows a search box.
  • Filter elements do not follow other filters. If a second filter element should only offer the values that match the first — for example only the agents of the selected skill — switch off Ignore Master Filters for it.

Date filter

The Date Filter narrows the dashboard down to a period — using buttons such as “Today” or “Last 7 Days”, or using a calendar.

  1. Home › Insert › Filter Elements › Date Filter.
  2. Drag a date field of the query you want to filter onto Dimension, for example ConversationStartTime.
  3. Under Design › Filter Type, choose Between for a period, Exact for a single day, or After and Before for an open-ended period.
  4. Design › Edit Periods opens Edit Periods. Add predefined periods with a double-click, for example “Today”, “Last 7 Days”, “This Month” and “Last Month”. On the right, they are listed with Caption and Period; a check mark under Default preselects a period when the dashboard opens. Add Custom Period… creates one of your own. Close the window with Close.
  5. In the dashboard, click a button or make a choice in the calendar via Set Filter….

The Range Filter is a chart over the time axis on which you select a section with two sliders. The menu of its argument contains Predefined Ranges; you define further ones under Design › Edit Periods.

Filters across multiple queries

Conversations ConversationTrackingStatistics Combo Box: SkillName filters Chart Cards Agent actions AgentTrackingDetails only with Cross-Data-Source Filtering, via the name SkillName Grid
A filter works within its query

A filter only affects the items that read the same query. So a combo box on the conversations does not filter a grid that shows the agent actions.

If it should, select the filtering item and switch on Data › Cross-Data-Source Filtering. It then also filters items of other queries — via a field with exactly the same name:

Field Exists in
SkillName, LanguageName, ConversationType all three queries
AgentName the phases of conversations and the agent actions

The safest way to narrow down the period is with a separate date filter for each query.

Drill-down

If a section contains several dimensions — for example the same date field as Year, Month-Year and Day-Month-Year — switch on Drill Down under Data › Interactivity. A click on a bar then shows the next level, for example the months of the selected year; Drill Up in the header of the item goes back. If the item is also a master filter, you go one level deeper with a double-click. The pivot expands its rows and columns instead.

Filters in groups and tabs

A Group limits how far filters reach. Select the group and choose under Group Tools › Data › Interactivity:

  • Master Filter off: filters in the group only work within the group.
  • Ignore Master Filters on: filters from outside do not reach the group.

A new group is shielded in both directions: Master Filter is off, Ignore Master Filters is on. The pages of a Tab Container have the same switches with the opposite defaults — their filters work outwards, and filters from outside reach them.
