Items and data

You insert items with Home › Insert. A new item takes its space from the largest existing one; how to move it afterwards is described in Arranging. A new item is named after its type with a number, for example “Chart 1”.

The items

Maps are called Choropleth Map and Geo Point Maps; they need geographic data that the statistics do not contain.

Assigning fields

1. Select the item.
2. In the data source browser, choose the Query.
3. Drag a field onto a placeholder in the DATA ITEMS pane, for example onto Value or Argument.

An item always reads only one query; the first field determines which. To make it read another one, select it, choose the query and click Change the data source for the dashboard item in the toolbar of the data source browser.

Dimensions and measures

Whether a field is grouped or summarized depends on the section you drag it into:

• Dimensions group: each value becomes a bar, a row, a segment. Arguments, Series, Rows, Columns and Dimensions take dimensions.
• Measures summarize — they count, add up or average. Values, Actual, Target, X-axis and Y-axis take measures.

A measure from a numeric field starts with Sum, from other fields with Count. The data item is named after the field and the summary, for example “TotalWaitDuration (Sum)”, a date dimension after its interval, for example “ConversationStartTime (Year)” — see Summarizing and Grouping.

Several dimensions in one section form a hierarchy from coarse to fine, for example year, month, day. The drill-down builds on this.

The sections of the items

Pivot, chart, pies, gauges, cards and treemap only show something once they have at least one measure; filter elements need a dimension.

Editing data items

• Menu: On the right of each data item, an arrow opens its menu with summary, grouping, sorting, format and rules — see Preparing data.
• Rename: Menu › Rename… opens Rename Data Item. Under New name:, enter what the dashboard should show, for example “Conversations”.
• Move: Drag a data item to another position within its section.
• Remove: Drag it out of the section. Home › Item › Remove Data Items empties the whole item.
• Hidden data items: At the bottom of the DATA ITEMS pane, Dimensions and Measures take fields that the item does not show. You use them to filter and sort, to determine the top N values or to build color rules.

Item options

Some sections have an icon next to their name that opens the options of the section:

Deltas: Cards, gauges and delta columns compare Actual with Target. Under Value type:, choose what is displayed: Actual value, Absolute variation, Percent variation or Percent of target. Result indication: determines which difference is good: Greater is good, Less is good, Warning if greater, Warning if less or No indication. Threshold type: and Threshold value: determine from which difference on the indicator changes.

Sparklines: Sparkline view type: sets Line, Area, Bar or Win/Loss.

Converting, transposing, duplicating

Under Home › Item and in the context menu of an item:

• Convert To turns the selected item into another type, for example a chart into a grid. Fields, summaries and names are kept as far as the new type supports them.
• Transpose swaps arguments and series, in the pivot rows and columns, in the scatter chart the axes.
• Duplicate creates a copy of the item.

The Data and Design tabs

Every selected item brings the Data and Design tabs. The same for all items are:

• Data › Filtering with Edit Filter and Clear — see Filtering;
• Data › Interactivity settings with Cross-Data-Source Filtering and Ignore Master Filters — see Filtering and linking;
• Design › Common with Show Caption and Edit Names — see Caption and names.

Items that can filter others also have Data › Interactivity with Single Master Filter, Multiple Master Filter and Drill Down. Beyond that:

The context menu of an item also shows the most important commands. For the date filter, you change the caption and names only there.
