Activation

Why licenses must be activated, how to create an activation request and apply the response, which grace periods apply and how the server reaches the internet via a proxy.

With the activation, ilogixx binds your licenses to your server: to its hardware and to the installed major version. Without activation, purchased keys are valid for 30 days and no longer after that. So activate

  • after entering new license keys,
  • after an update to a new major version,
  • after major changes to the hardware of the server, for example a move to another computer,
  • when the information area reports a grace period.

Each server is activated separately, so a standby server is activated on its own.

Activating manually

The activation works via two files: the Administration creates a request, and you receive a response that you apply.

  1. Open Licenses › Activation.
  2. Check your customer data: Company name, Street, Number, ZIP, City, Country, Website, Title, First name, Last name, Email, Phone number and Reseller. The Administration takes them over from the last activation. Empty fields are highlighted in red; only Website may remain empty.
  3. Under Reason for this activation, select why you are activating: License added, System upgrade, Activation after hardware has changed significantly, Activation after significant change of system time, Licensing became corrupt or Other.
  4. For Pay-by-Use, turn on Pay-by-Use; for a standby server with Pay-by-Use, turn on Pay-by-Use for standby system. For purchased licenses, both switches remain off.
  5. Click Save and save the request. The file has the extension .slf; its name contains the company, the date and the version and, for a standby server, also “Standby”.
  6. Send the file to your reseller or to ilogixx. You receive an activation file with the extension .laf in return.
  7. Open Licenses › Activation again, click Apply and select the .laf file.

The Administration reports Activation key applied successfully, and the license manager closes. Besides the customer data, the request contains the identifiers of the hardware, the license keys with their state and your name as the requesting administrator with your computer and Windows account.

If activation fails

If no request can be created, the Administration reports Activation request can't be created. Reason is: and the reason:

Reason Remedy
evaluation systems can't be activated First enter a purchased Server: Base key.
licensing database is offline The server cannot reach its license database. Check SQL Server.
no hardware identifiers read. please try later Try again a few minutes later.
customer data are required Fill in all customer data.
Pay by use cannot be switched to key usage A system with Pay-by-Use cannot be switched back to purchased licenses.

If applying the response fails, the Administration reports Error "…" occurred while applying this activation key:

Error Meaning
activation key invalid The file is damaged or is not an activation file.
activation key is already in use This activation has already been applied.
activation key is too old There is already a newer activation, or the file is too old. Request a new one.
activation key is for another version of MyContactCenter The activation does not match the installed major version.
activation key issued for different hardware The activation belongs to another server.
system time invalid The clock of the server is wrong. Set it correctly and apply the file again.
corrupt database, database access failed The server cannot read or write its license database.

Automatic activation via the internet

If your system is set up for it, the server also activates itself: every four hours, but at most once a day, it checks whether an activation is due, fetches it from the ilogixx activation server and applies it. For this, it needs an HTTPS connection (port 443) to the internet, if necessary via the Web Proxy. You do not see any of this in the Administration; the license manager shows whether the licenses are in order.

Grace periods

The server checks its licenses continuously. If something is wrong, a grace period of 30 days starts in most cases. The Administration reports it after every login with Deactivation occurs in … day(s), and Status of services shows Licensing issues. When it has expired, the licenses concerned no longer count.

Cause What happens Remedy
Hardware changed The identifiers of the server no longer match the activation. After the grace period, only evaluation licenses count. activate again, reason Activation after hardware has changed significantly
New major version or new keys Purchased keys are not activated for the installed major version. After the grace period, only keys activated for this version count. activate again
Warranty insufficient The extended warranty of a feature does not cover the installed version. After the grace period, its purchased licenses no longer count. extend the warranty, see Extended warranty
System time set back The clock of the server goes back more than one day behind the last saved state. This takes effect immediately, without a grace period: evaluation keys and keys not yet activated no longer count. set the clock correctly, activate again if necessary
License data corrupted No licenses count any more. activate again, reason Licensing became corrupt
Pay-by-Use expired The time-limited activation has ended; all licenses are at 0. Status of services warns from 30 days before. activate again in good time

Web Proxy

If the route to the internet goes through a proxy, enter it on the Web Proxy tab: the computer name under Web Proxy and the Port, then Save. An empty Web Proxy field turns the proxy off. No confirmation appears.

The proxy only applies to the connections of the server to the ilogixx activation server: for the automatic activation and the daily transmission of the usage data. Before each connection, the server checks whether it can reach the internet via the proxy; if not, it tries directly. Login data for the proxy cannot be entered. Each server saves its proxy separately.
